REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque The Obama administration said it would drop a plan to tax so-called 529 college savings accounts , after the proposal sparked widespread criticism over its potential impact on the middle class. The move followed a public call by House Speaker John Boehner (R., Ohio) on Tuesday for the White House to withdraw its plan. Calls also were coming privately from leaders of the presidents own party. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) pressed the case for dropping the plan in conversations with senior administration officials aboard Air Force One, as she flew with the president from India to Saudi Arabia, according to a person familiar with the matter. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama has dropped a controversial proposal to tax "529" college savings plans, a White House official said on Tuesday, calling it a "distraction" from administration efforts to provide middle-class tax relief. The proposal had aroused opposition from Republicans and Democrats in Congress. A source familiar with the situation said House of Representatives Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi had pressed senior administration officials to drop the proposal as she flew with Obama on Air Force One from India to Saudi Arabia. "Given it has become such a distraction, were not going to ask Congress to pass the 529 provision so that they can instead focus on delivering a larger package of education tax relief that has bipartisan support," the White House official said. The official said the plan had been "a very small component of the presidents overall plan to deliver $50 billion in education tax cuts for middle-class families." The "529" plans are sponsored by states and run by investment management companies.

Obama Urges Women's Safety, Religious Tolerance in Last India Speech

Obama also used his address to touch on the importance of defending religious diversity. Although the majority of Indias 1.27 billion-strong population is Hindu, about a fifth of its people belong to other religions like Islam, Christianity and Sikhism, with diversity a growing subject of concern among opponents of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party that Modi chairs. In India and America, our diversity is our strength, he said. India will succeed so long as it is not splintered along the lines of religious faith. Meanwhile, speaking about the U.S.-India relationship on Tuesday, President Obama called it one of the defining partnerships of the century, and advocated a greater role for India in the Asia-Pacific, seemingly a tacit acknowledgement of Chinas growing regional influence. He also touched upon empowering women, an issue that Modi made one of the major themes of Obamas visit and Mondays Republic Day celebrations .
